Pattern (affiliate link): Pirates-Booty Boxer Briefs
Time to Make: 45 minutes each or six hours to make eight pair. It shouldn’t have taken that long – see below.
Material: ¼ yard of cotton lycra per pair in a size 6
Total Cost: $8 total. The fabric came from a bargain half-yard lot that I bought from Girl Charlie fabrics which worked out to be $4 per yard.
Sometimes a sewing project can seem so simple at first, and then take an eternity to finish. Have you ever encountered a project like that? I had promised my son that I would make him some boxer-briefs because he outgrew all of his old underwear. It looked like a simple project – it is a simple project – and I was certain I could sew them up in no time flat.
It appears that I had somehow angered the sewing gods who then saw fit to send all manner of difficulty my way. I broke needles on both my serger and sewing machine. Then the sewing machine foot fell off mid-seam, my threads kept breaking and the feed-dogs repeatedly ate the fabric while pretending to sew stitches. It was crazy town! I have no explanation. I went on to sew up a dress with no problems what-so-ever. Totally weird.
Anyway….long story short. I finished them and my son is happy 😊 The first pair I made was a wadder because my son didn’t like the close fit of the legs. I adjusted the pattern by adding a 3/4” wedge to the leg circumference (see picture below) to make the leg just a tad roomier and that fixed the problem.
Sometimes people ask me why I bother sewing these things when I could save time and buy them instead. One big reason is that my son loves wearing things I made him. Will this wear off someday? Probably. But for now, I know it reminds him that he is loved, and I think that is pretty cool. And at $2 a pair, the price is right. Sometimes sewing can be cheaper than store bought if you find a fabric bargain.
Have a fabulous day!
