Two years ago, my husband and I moved our family three hours east, to a sixty-acre homestead in the mountains of California. Armed with pure enthusiasm and virtually no experience at this way of life, we arrived with the hope that this change would bring us greater satisfaction and overall happiness than the old life we were living. And guess what??
It totally has!
Our old city life had run dry of new experiences and had little outdoor space to work in. Moving here changed so much! In the last two years we’ve built a chicken coop that houses ten lovely hens, and constructed a chicken run that borders our vegetable garden and also keeps the deer out. We’ve learned how to preserve vegetables and butcher venison. We’ve done battle with woodpeckers, gophers, paper wasps and mud-daubers. We experienced our first snow! (Three cheers for four actual seasons!)
But overall, the best thing that has come of this adventure is that I have learned the value of what I can make with my own two hands. I had no idea that so much joy and satisfaction lay just at my fingertips. Preparing meals with produce we grew, warming the house with wood we chopped and split, while wearing the clothes I sewed for myself- there is no better feeling.
While I enjoy gardening and working outdoors, my true passion is sewing. I have sewed for years; cross-stitch, quilts, even belly-dance costumes. Once we moved here, I began sewing clothes for everyday wear and it is so much fun! I want this blog to inspire other sewers and would-be sewers to really go for it! Design and sew up that dress you’ve been thinking of. Don’t know where to start? Let me help you!
Maybe you don’t sew but you’re interested in making a garden or moving to a homestead. I will definitely let you know what we’re up to on Fox Flower Lane.
So…Welcome! I am so glad you found me and I hope you will come back and visit often!
